Why We Built This Site
Illinois provides several public access routes, yet record ownership is easy to confuse. Madison County booking material belongs with the Sheriff or jail, filed charges and dispositions belong with the Circuit Clerk, and statewide criminal-history information comes from ISP's Bureau of Identification. IDOC maintains state custody records, while ISP also operates the Illinois Sex Offender Registry. We assembled the official contact details, search links, fees, and request steps that distinguish those systems.
What You Will Find Here

- Official check instructions: distinctions between ISP name inquiries and fingerprint-based self-review

- Clearing information: where Illinois expungement and sealing petitions begin
What We Cannot Do
Madison County Criminal History is a privately operated reference resource, not part of an Illinois court, law-enforcement office, or state agency. Its role has firm limits:
- We do not retrieve official records or perform government background checks
- We cannot submit FOIA requests, expungement petitions, or other filings for a visitor
- We have no authority to certify court papers, repository transcripts, or criminal records
- We cannot apply Illinois law to a person's charge, warrant, or case
- We cannot promise that an agency has not changed an address, fee, phone number, or procedure
An official copy must come from its custodian, such as the Madison County Sheriff, Circuit Clerk, or ISP Bureau of Identification. This resource can identify that office but cannot issue its documents.
Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes displayed on some pages. Each provider controls its results, prices, and service terms. A paid signup reached through one of those tools may produce a referral payment that supports free access to this resource. We neither set the provider's charges nor control the information it returns.
